REMEMBER SCONEX?
I might've been about 13 or 14, and before I ever heard of
Myspace there was Sconex. My cousins helped me make an account, and now that I
think of it I was then what it is now to be the epitome of catfish which is
hilarious. Everything was a lie - my name, my age even my profile picture, it
was a photo of Beyoncé. I remember religiously going online and checking my
Sconex notifications, seeing who sent me friend requests, who in-boxed me, what
people posted etc. At that age it’s easy to fall prey on the internet
especially when you have little to any knowledge of the predators that exist
online. There was this one boy I spoke to on there regularly, I never met him
in person and never even heard his voice. I enjoyed speaking to him, I felt
like I had another friend, that of which I never had many of. My mind was so
premature that I never really stopped to question the real identity of that
person. When you don't know any better you don't stop to take any precautions.
However, this social site was a form of entertainment and helped me engage with
different people regardless of if I knew them in the real world or not.It was and still is very easy to create a different persona
of yourself online than in real life, and that is part of the reason why people
then and more so now are keen to having social media accounts.
Social media has
grown immensely since the Early 2000's. I believe it still possess the same
capabilities of being resourceful and entertaining, but it has indeed expanded.
Social media can arguably do just as much good as harm these days. It is a
medium, a tool hence it can be used as people deem necessary; it can be used to
an advantage regardless of the intentions. People can also use their platform
via social media to help a cause be it personal, or professional. For example,
after Hurricane Irma rapper Fat Joe posted on his Instagram that he is going to
fill up a jet with food, clothing, etc. to send to Puerto-Rico to help. Other
celebrities supported and participated because it was for a good cause. The
ability to broadcast his message got people to come together to help others in
need. In this day and age social media
moves rapidly fast, it can help people achieve their dreams quicker, but it can
just as easily destroy it. There are unwritten rules to social media, call it
common sense if you will; but we all know common sense isn't quite so common.
Anyone with any social account knows that he/she is responsible for that which
they post, once it's on the web it stays on the web even if it's thought to be
deleted or forgotten. If it hasn't already, social media will become the
motherboard to social lives negatively and positively.
