Experience
Creating a
self-video is not as simple as it sounds. There are things to be mindful of
when shooting scenes on a smart phone. Lighting is extremely important because
it effects the visibility and ultimately the quality of the video. Ensuring
that there is not too much shaking occurring while recording is essential.
Having to fulfill the requirements of filming in front of the camera and behind
the camera is a struggle, especially when all content is being filmed by one
person. Each scene is not shot perfectly the first time around. Having to
re-shoot is frustrating, but it can be an advantage. It is better to over film
than to film exact or not film enough, the more footage to work with when
editing the better. Using iMovie to edit is convenient because it is beginner
friendly. While filming is the near painless part of making a video, Editing is
the more tedious yet thrilling part of the process. Editing in iMovie is
somewhat quicker than other editing applications, but it is still time
consuming. Being that each video has a time requirement to meet, it is
important to be meticulous with each clip.. All the clips added must serve,
keeping in mind that there are three different videos that must communicate the
same subject but have three different purposes. If there are any parts in clips
that can be cut out they can be trimmed. For multiple parts in a clip(s) that
could be used at a different time in the video they would have to be spliced
and dragged to the preferred slot. It takes a lot of splicing because certain
frames can’t be cut out due to the flow of the video. When the group video came
together a lot of trimming and splicing out had to be done to meet the
requisite of exactly four minutes not a second over. Thankfully, there was
enough footage to trim and cut as needed, as opposed to being under the time
requirement and having to stress about not having enough footage. The smoothest
part of the entire process is adding the opening and closing credits/titles,
adding transitions and inserting the audio. Once the video is completed it has
to be exported properly which can take a few minutes depending on the
length/size of the video. Uploading to Youtube and Vimeo is a quick and simple
process. Youtube is well known and easy to navigate.
Videos can
be used as a communication tool instead of writing and/or photos. Videos aid in
delivering a message. Depending on how well videos are directed and produced
they can sometimes be more or just as effective as writing or photos. There are
more details to pay attention to in videos such as the audio, the location,
background, the actions and every person in the video. For viewers all details
will have to be included while processing the video to come to an understanding
of what topic was being communicated. Texts and photographs can always be
misinterpreted, on the other hand while video can still be misinterpreted it is
less likely to be. For the most part the audience has a general sense of what
is going on which can lead them to figure out the message of the video. It also
would require the audience to use contextual clues to help them follow and
understand the storyline. Being able to see physical reactions or expressions
supports the narrative of each film. It would also be a more engaging form of
communication, there is more substance in a film which would be a Segway for
conversation. In this era videos are dominating and are becoming essential
tools for communicating. It is crucial to not misrepresent the theme of a topic
because it can leave an ill impression and furthermore be unsuccessful in
communicating the message. The composition of the video is also vital. As
mentioned before each clip must serve, as well as everything else included. If
it is not needed because it doesn’t assist anything in the video it is best to
take it out otherwise it will lead to confusion.
The subject
of the videos is bargaining, which is a complex word/topic to visually portray.
The clips for each video must be edited enough to where the topic could be
identified but not overkill the entire video. Filming for the subject is the
most difficult part because of how abstract the word is. Bargaining doesn’t
call for a broad amount of ideas like the other stages of grief during asemester such as: anger, depression, denial, and acceptance. Creativity is
warranted for this particular topic, but given the specifics of the subject
“stages of grief during a semester” there weren’t many concepts on how to
adequately demonstrate someone bargaining for school without potentially
misleading the viewers. There could be more depth to the video, making it more
intriguing but also clearer. The video had to capture two significant
objectives, which are to display things that say something about the person
making the video and to actively convey the subject of the video.
The self-portrait videos should mainly consist
of things whether its items, small or large objects, animals or places that
makeup an individual, while simultaneously communicating a specific subject. It
is challenging to choose a topic and have to create a project for it such as a
video to effectively communicate it without directly stating what is being
portrayed. In addition to that, having to meet certain requirements makes the
process more stressful and even confusing. It Is almost like playing a game of
charades. Working collaboratively can alleviate some of the stress and anxiety;
it helps to know that peers can be reliable and make the whole experience more
enjoyable. One of the most important parts of the project is being able to provide
constructive criticism as well as receive clarity for any parts of the videos
that were unclear. Not only do these videos test how well a topic can be
communicated visually, but also how creative each person can be.
